Community Engagement Strengthens Electrification Impact in Burkina Faso

Earlier this year, the Agence Burkinabè de l’Electrification Rurale (ABER), with support from AMP Burkina Faso, organized information and awareness sessions in 11 rural communities across the country. These included Neboun, Bonga, Baribsi, Goalla, Kaba, Seguedin, Tio, Bouanga, Zoundri, Bantogodo, and Sandogo.

The sessions aimed to help residents understand the benefits and responsibilities associated with electrification, including:

  • Safe connections and compliance with technical standards
  • Risks and consequences of illegal electricity use
  • Procedures for connections, costs, and technical requirements

A central focus of the meetings was on productive uses of energy, a core approach that AMP integrates across the region. Productive uses help communities leverage electricity to power essential services, support small businesses, improve agricultural productivity, and stay connected digitally.

Through AMP support, ABER also provided subsidized equipment in many localities, including mills, cold storage kits, and hairdressing tools, helping communities maximize the economic and social benefits of electrification.

Each session concluded with interactive discussions, games, and prize giveaways, ensuring that engagement was participatory and fun while fostering ownership of the electrification projects.

By combining community engagement with productive-use initiatives, electrification projects in Burkina Faso are helping deliver lasting socio-economic impact, strengthening local institutions, attracting private investment, and transforming rural livelihoods.
